Application scope of ultraviolet lamp
Ultraviolet has a strong bactericidal effect, but its penetrating ability to objects is very weak. It is applicable to the space disinfection of operating room, burn ward, infectious ward and sterile room, as well as the disinfection of heat-resistant articles and table surface.
It is the ultraviolet wave length in the range of 240~280nm that can kill and destroy the molecular structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) or RNA (ribonucleic acid) in bacteria and viruses, causing the death of growth cells and (or) regenerative cells, achieving the effect of sterilization and disinfection. Especially when the wavelength is 253.7, the bactericidal effect of UV is the strongest.
Generally, the wavelength of ultraviolet light reaching the ground after sunlight penetrates the atmosphere is 287~390 nm, which deviates from the optimal sterilization wavelength range of ultraviolet light (about 250~285 nm). It is mainly because the absorption of the atmospheric ozone layer reduces the speed of the ultraviolet intensity lower than 290nm in the sunlight spectrum, so the sterilization ability of sunlight is inferior to that of the special ultraviolet sterilization lamp.
It is generally believed that ultraviolet light can change and destroy structural mutation, change the genetic and transcriptional characteristics of cells, and make organisms lose the ability of protein synthesis and reproduction. The absorption of other proteins (the absorption peak of aromatic ring in phenylalanine, tryptophan and tyrosine is 280 nm) may also play a role in the sterilization process of ultraviolet light.
